We are proud to present Into The Great Wide Yonder, the second album by Anders Trentemøller and successor to the highly successful The Last Resort (2006).
Like his debut, which connected with new audiences around the world, Into The Great Wide Yonder is a truly extraordinary album, offering as much depth and soul as its predecessor, but with a completely renewed and different sound.
Above all, these ten tracks show an artist willing to take risks, find inspiration in new places and move beyond the sound of his previous album. Trentemøller comments: “Of course I didn’t want to make the same record twice. For me, this album is a logical evolution of The Last Resort.”
Instead of repeating formulas, he simply began gathering new ideas, without overthinking the direction the music would take: “The only thing I knew was that I wanted it to sound more organic and analog.”
Compared to the intimate and atmospheric electronic pieces of The Last Resort, the new album’s ten compositions have a stranger, more mystical and dramatic vibe, full of dynamics, distorted and characterful guitars, real and electronic drums mixed with enveloping and spectral synthesizers.
With Into The Great Wide Yonder, Trentemøller not only explores new emotional and atmospheric universes, but also combines his sensibility for building majestic soundscapes with a solid melodic and tonal sense. Original harmonic progressions and his sensitivity for melodies are fundamental elements for him, and that’s why most of the instruments on this album were played by Trentemøller himself.
“I like the possibility of being surprised when chords and melodies transform into something new. The music I like best allows themes and sounds to return in different disguises.”
The Danish multi-instrumentalist and producer also demonstrates an unexpected talent for finding vocalists who perfectly fit the mood of his songs. The album’s first single, the delicate and beautiful Sycamore Feeling, featuring Marie Fisker, is one of the highlights.
In fact, all the vocal pieces are impressive. Trentemøller decided to collaborate with English artist Fyfe Dangerfield, a member of the British band Guillemots, as well as Danish singers Solveig Sandnes and Josephine Philip from the then-debuting Danish indie duo Darkness Falls.
Each brings their own sound and personality to the album, while their voices seamlessly integrate with Trentemøller’s atmospheric compositions.
This is an album that grows over time, as each track silently finds its way under the listener’s skin. Although the sound of Into The Great Wide Yonder represents a step forward from his previous works, Trentemøller’s signature is still easy to recognize in this inspired collection of songs and atmospheres.
The sonic richness, marked contrasts, and bold musical colors are pure Trentemøller.
“Into The Great Wide Yonder perhaps demands more from the listener than The Last Resort, because it ended up being quite a dramatic album. There’s more noise, more going on.”
But getting to know these tracks is a deeply rewarding experience, as the album continues to grow with each listen, and it is safe to say that Anders Trentemøller has managed to create a unique and lasting work.
