In the years leading up to 1971, Sun Ra wrote many compositions and poems specifically inspired by ancient African kingdoms, as well as others related to mythological and heliocentric connotations. For this reason, a visit to Egypt and an opportunity for the Arkestra to play there was a necessity. Ra's first concerts outside the United States had taken place in late summer and fall of 1970, with performances in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and a second European tour was arranged for late 1971. At the end of that second tour, Ra learned of cheap flights from Denmark to Cairo.
These editions include recordings made by Arkestra member Thomas “Bugs” Hunter in December 1971 in the streets around the Mena House Hotel, in Giza; at a concert held at the home of expatriate Hartmut Geerken of the Goethe Institute in Heliopolis; on a live broadcast from a Cairo television channel; and at a concert at the Ballon Theatre in Cairo. Ra later edited the three LPs in the Live In Egypt series for his Saturn label and its affiliated sister label, Thoth Intergalactic: Dark Myth Equation Visitation, Nidhamu, and Horizon.
These three albums are now reissued for the first time individually with their original covers, and all tracks have been remastered from the original tapes.
