In the years leading up to 1971, Sun Ra wrote many compositions and poems specifically inspired by ancient African kingdoms, as well as others related to mythological and heliocentric connotations. A visit to Egypt and an opportunity for the Arkestra to play there was therefore a necessity. Ra’s first gigs outside the United States had taken place in late summer and autumn 1970, with appearances in France, Germany and the UK, and a second European tour was arranged for late 1971. At the close of that second tour, Ra learned of cheap flights from Denmark to Cairo.

These editions include recordings made by Arkestra member Thomas “Bugs” Hunter in December 1971 on the streets around the Mena House Hotel, Giza; at a concert held at the home of expat Hartmut Geerken of the Goethe Institute in Heliopolis; at a live broadcast from a Cairo television channel; and at a concert at the Ballon Theatre in Cairo. Ra later edited the three LPs in the Live In Egypt series for his Saturn label and its affiliated sister label, Thoth Intergalactic: Dark Myth Equation Visitation, Nidhamu and Horizon.

These three albums are now being reissued individually for the first time with their original covers, and all tracks have been remastered from the original tapes.
