Following a string of successful releases on iconic labels such as Surreal, Low Pressings and their own Geek imprint, Andy Davies and Dave Clements, aka Spincycle, unleashed Making Faces on Bushwacka’s legendary Oblong imprint. Originally released in 2002, this release perfectly showcases the duo’s unique approach to the tech-house and garage sounds that powered the UK underground scene. In the two decades that followed, this classic became a highly sought-after rarity, as confirmed by the exorbitant prices on Discogs, so a reissue was more than due.

Making Faces opens with hypnotic, bongo-led percussion, building with crisp hats and snares. The weighty bass is deep and warm, while dreamy chords add atmosphere before an enveloping, techno-soul-infused melodic line rises and falls at the perfect moments. Next, the UKG-inspired Twister takes a rawer, more direct approach. Energetic, swinging beats underpin a monstrous sub-bass line that is simply irresistible. As if that wasn’t enough, the duo manages to add another enveloping bass line, showcasing top-notch production and programming skills.
