Roman Flügel - Eating Darkness [Running Back]

Roman Flügel is a magician. This statement is far from hyperbole. Just drop the needle on any, I mean any!, of his records (including collaborations) from the early nineties onwards and you will see for yourself: not a single one is without that special effect. The magic works instantly. And as with magic, it’s hard to explain. But I guess that is what makes it magical.

"Eating Darkness" is the title of his latest spell. Affected by the fundamental impact any system suffered in 2020, but not the result of it, it is an album that could absorb it, as its name might suggest. Music and nightlife go hand in hand as escapism and as anchors, or as the underlying layer of social interactions. They allow people to deal with hardship as well as the burden and joy of life. That is the starting point and the hope of "Eating Darkness": the perspective and invitation to enrich one’s existence.

Limited to the format of a single LP and evoking a time with format constraints, the nine tracks are a testament to Flügel’s soft spot for the art of pop music, using small and especially short motifs. Furthermore, equipped with a clear instrumentation and without any camouflage, "Eating Darkness" corresponds to his idea of a virtual band.
