Orlando Voorn returns to Heist after his 2022 “Heist mastercuts” EP and arrives with a strong dose of soulful, mechanical funk. “Heist mastercuts part 2” sees the techno & house veteran showcasing his eclectic style with the vocal cut “Soundsystem”, the mid-west inspired sample jam “High” and his collaborative drum workout with Boo Williams “909”.

On the first “Heist mastercuts”, Orlando went deep into his archives and presented a collection of old and new tracks, showing us that his music has aged well and reminding us that he’s still a producer at the top of his game. He kept 2022 busy with releases on our own Transient Nature imprint, Kompakt, a handful of Bandcamp exclusive tracks and a self-released album. Somehow, he found the time to work on his next Heist EP and managed to leave us completely blown away by the music.

The EP kicks off with “Soundsystem”: a masterclass in simplicity. A steady, minimal groove guides you through the track, where silky vocals and hazy chords take you on a journey through Orlando’s sonic universe. Orlando goes into freak mode with a hypnotic lead and dubby keys to add a bit of playfulness to an already standout track.

“High” is Orlando’s take on what could easily be an old Andres track. Here, he samples a female vocal and cleverly adds his own vocals to give depth and originality to the track. The percussion in “High” moves in a fluid way and underlines the feel of this track: it’s fun, fresh and incredibly funky. There’s a bit of Dam Swindle sauce in the mix to make sure this track hits just the right spot on any given dance floor.

On the flip, there’s “Day by day”: a classic Orlando Voorn cut with a live bass, plenty of chopped samples and a Rhodes loop that could have come straight out of extra footage from a “First Choice” recording session. The B-side ends with a collaboration with Orlando’s close friend Emil and legendary Chicago producer Boo Williams. The producers take a monologue by Boo Williams about working with the 909 and deliver a drum workout, yes, with the 909, that keeps building energy, showing exactly what Boo is talking about.

The digital package also includes an instrumental mix of “Soundsystem” and an alternate mix of “909”, just in case. This is the first artist release in our 10-year anniversary of Heist, and this EP perfectly encapsulates the Heist Sound: varied, deep, soulful and punchy.
