They say the third time's the charm. But if the first two times were already so memorable, what more could you ask for?
Nebraska returns with a bang for his third release on Heist, following the Soften the Wireless EP in 2016 and Metaphor to the Floor in 2017. It's hard to believe that three years have passed since his last appearance on Heist, but with Y'miss me baby?, Nebraska is back in the spotlight with another release full of disco-flavored electronics. The man of the moment in the Italian disco scene, Giovanni Damico, joins the party and delivers an impressive remix with 80s vibes.
That's not to say that Nebraska (Alistair Gibbs) has been idle since 2017. He has launched his own label, Friends & Relations, where he further explores his cut-and-paste style with some truly great disco dubs and other sonic adventures. Additionally, he made a guest appearance on Aaron Dae and JKriv's Razor 'n Tape Reserve. Beyond his musical explorations, he has also published a book (Surprise Party Every Week) where he gives us an insight into how he sees the world.
His vision is loaded with humor and positivity, and focuses on creating new meanings through recontextualization. This is evident in his music and on this new EP on Heist. The main track, "Y'miss me baby?" oozes funk with a clever combination of samples from different contexts, assembled to create something completely new, yet familiar. The song has an authentic 80s disco feel, and the vocoder adds even more of that Zapp & Roger-style flavor. It's a laid-back track that feels like it was recorded on a cloudy Sunday afternoon, with no pressure and plenty of room for fun.
The mood changes radically with "Dip and Flip," a high-energy house track that rattles, repeats, and flashes sonic sparks until it reaches a full-blown disco frenzy.
The B-side kicks off with the remix of the main track by Italian disco wizard, Giovanni Damico. He's been on a great run lately with releases on Lumberjacks in Hell and more recently on Star Creature, where he has found a space to explore his own vision of modern boogie. His "jam" remix transforms the track into a free-form structure where guitars, disco claps, echoes, and retro synths work together to deliver a heavy dose of Italian boogie.
The EP closes with an unexpected twist in true Nebraska style. "Xia Long Bao" sounds like a lost Nick Holder track from the 90s, with looping island-style Rhodes keys and a lazy vocal chant in the background. The choice of samples along with the catchy rhythm make this a track with Nebraska's unmistakable stamp and a quality close to this single.
We are very happy to have Nebraska back on Heist, and with this incredible EP, you're sure to bring smiles to the dance floor.
