E2-E4, released in 1984, is a solo recording by German musician and Ash Ra Tempel founder Manuel Göttsching. The album consists of an hour-long minimalist electronic track that Göttsching recorded in a single take using a sequencer, with improvised keyboards, metallic percussion, and guitar.
Pitchfork and The Guardian named the album one of the best of the 1980s due to its significant role in the development of house and techno music in the late 1980s and early 1990s.[5][3] Although partly inspired by New York Latin club rhythms and minimalists like Steve Reich, Göttsching was surprised to discover that people danced to the track.[3]
The track became a hit at the Paradise Garage dance club in New York.[3] Sueño Latino sampled E2-E4 in their 1989 song "Sueño Latino."[3] The album was also an early influence on the ambient techno works of Carl Craig, The Black Dog, and The Orb.[6] In 1994, Craig released a remix titled "Remake" under his Paperclip People alias. Basic Channel released a remix called "Basic Reshape" of "Remake," which was included on their compilation album BCD under the name "e2e4 Basic Reshape."
