Debt is Harvey Sutherland’s new album, and it revolves around the cost of doing business in the meme economy. In his first LP since 2022's debut, Boy, the Australian artist distills his fusion-disco repertoire into ten microhouse-funk essentials. A few years removed from the “neurotic funk” of Harvey’s psychotherapeutic Boy, Debt is his direct response to pressures manifesting outside the self. Still, in its own way, it remains a reflection of Harvey Sutherland’s musical landscapes, which stretch between the grit and sheen of private press disco and the sensuous plot lines of Metro Area.
The album’s title alludes to the financial contortions required to aspire, survive and thrive as an independent artist. But Debt is best understood as the ledger of what we owe—and to whom—over a creative life. What is the return on investment of being an artist, a son, a friend, a partner, a parent? Have we been worth the investment our loved ones have made in us? If this sounds transactional, it’s merely the lingua franca of our overwhelmingly digital culture—a huckster’s bazaar in which Bob Dylan free-styles over Salt Bae, and Wordsworth makes his proposal to the Rizzler.
As with Boy, Harvey Sutherland opens Debt to a tight crew of collaborators: Tampa rap duo (and Jan Jelinek fans) They Hate Change; Californian Vicky Farewell, who features on the smoldering lovers rock of ‘Remember’; and one of Australia’s great songwriters, Julian Hamilton of The Presets. The album’s global cast is a natural extension of a charmed musical life that has led Harvey Sutherland to the booth of Panorama Bar, a Glastonbury stage as bandleader, support slots for Khruangbin and Hot Chip, and remixes for Disclosure, Cut Copy, Chromeo and many more. One of Debt’s concerns—anxieties?—is that these experiences are held precariously and can easily be lost in the infinite scroll of AI sludge, which has already become a kind of music impresario, responsible for music played billions of times and made by musicians who do not exist. But Debt has no time or room for complaint. It's the same old game: art or nothing.
