Berlin-based label Ascension on Wax continues to deepen its jazz-influenced trajectory with the forthcoming release of DFRA's A Quiet Storm EP, available in June on 12” vinyl and digital formats (Cat. No: AOW005). Available for purchase and pre-order from May 15th, the EP showcases DFRA's refined blend of soul, jazz, and classic house sensibilities, further enriched by a remix from Detroit producer Jon Dixon.

Originally from Colombia and currently based in Buenos Aires, DFRA (Diego Ruiz) brings a deeply musical approach, shaped by formal studies in composition and a lifelong immersion in hip-hop, gospel, soul, and disco. His productions balance two complementary facets: lush musicality rooted in jazz and the raw, impulsive energy of Detroit and Chicago house. This duality fully unfolds on A Quiet Storm EP, marking a new step in the evolution of his sound identity.

The lead track, “Quiet Storm,” opens the record with a deep, enveloping groove elevated by exquisite saxophone work, setting an introspective yet dancefloor-ready atmosphere. It is followed by “Strings,” which unfurls a dreamlike atmosphere, rich piano textures, and a warm, jazzy current that highlights DFRA’s compositional finesse. In “Charlene,” soulful vocals intertwine with harmonic progressions reminiscent of early Motor City Drum Ensemble, resulting in a nostalgic yet forward-looking house cut.

Completing the release, Jon Dixon reimagines “Charlene” from a distinctly Detroit perspective. Stripping the track of its original elements and rebuilding it with deeper textures and signature keyboard work, Dixon channels the spirit of Underground Resistance while moving into more meditative territory, bridging jazz improvisation and machine-driven rhythm.

Founded in Berlin, Ascension on Wax continues to honor the legacy of jazz within house music, bringing together contemporary producers with a strong visual identity and limited vinyl releases. With A Quiet Storm EP, the label reaffirms its commitment to authentic, soulful club music, rooted in the tradition of the 90s American scene, but with an eye firmly on the future.
