Good friends and co-captains of Record Mission, Dan Tyler (one half of duo Idjut Boys) and Nick The Record take the reins on the third volume of the Mr Bongo Edits 12” series. With previous edits handled by Danny Krivit and Luke Una, Dan and Nick set their sights on a hand-picked selection of iconic 70s Cuban recordings for this cosmic three-track whirlwind. On the A-side, Dan chooses two tracks by Juan Pablo Torres, whilst Nick tackles a Grupo Los Yoyi track on the B-side. Retouching, extending, and re-working the recordings with a dose of extra magic, they re-frame the tracks to suit today’s dance floor sound and structure.
Dan, along with Conrad McDonnell, formed Idjut Boys in the early 90s, developing a style laden with dub and disco undertones that has permeated their countless productions, remixes and DJ sets. Talking about the two tracks he chose to re-work for this EP, Dan comments: “Having been buried by an avalanche of good music courtesy of Mr Bongo, I set about extending and adding effects to a couple of the fantastic tracks from the Juan Pablo Torres records that he recently reissued. Strictly for disc jockeys use, and barn dances.”
First up, Dan focuses on Cuban master Juan Pablo Torres’s 1978 album, Algo Nuevo, and takes one of its standout tracks, Cacao, giving it more room to breathe. He stretches out the scat vocal line and the percussive climax that harks back to George Kranz’s 1983 electronic disco anthem Din Daa Daa, whilst adding psychedelic synths and dub-wise space echoes, building the tension to great effect. This one sounds massive on a club sound system and the enveloping synths seemed to lift the roof off when we played it in the incredible La Paloma hall in Barcelona.
Next up, Dan puts his attention to Torres’s 1977 album Super Son, and gives the psych-funk Latin track Pastel En Descarga a dub treatment. Heavy with delays and drama, he keeps and extends the breakers style funk introduction, making this a straight-up and hard-hitting cosmic-funk gem.
On the flip side, Nick The Record —co-founder of Tangent, long-time Life Force resident, and seasoned re-work master— revisits an edit he originally constructed back in 2009. Running at more than double the length of the original cut, Nick’s version of Grupo Los Yoyi’s track Paco La Calle (1977) is made with dancers firmly in mind. This secret weapon builds and bubbles, with the percussion pushing and pulling before the psychedelic synth lines return with searing force. In this fresh 2025 version, Dan jumps in to add glistening new synth lines to the mix.
