The year is 1989. Techno’s second wave has begun to permeate the world, taking a young Carl Craig to a small village in the Belgian countryside. It is here, with no distractions and set on making his way, that Craig comes across one of the only drum machines in the country, a midi-808 controlled Alesis. In a single session, he composes and mixes a handful of records that to this day are regarded as some of his most raw and explosive contributions to the history of electronic music.

Carl revisits this fateful chapter through the lens of a famed cut under his Psyche moniker, entitled ‘From Beyond’, with a ‘C2 2023 Mix’ and remixes from Seth Troxler, Ataxia and Admn, available from July 14th on Planet E Communications.

The Psyche moniker, known for early releases on Transmat such as ‘Crack\down’ and ‘Elements’, embodied a more sober, less sample-based attitude in opposition to Carl’s more aggressive style under his 69 and Paperclip People identities, which employed more samples. ‘From Beyond’, first released in 1990 via the ‘Crackdown’ single on Transmat, offers an eerie glimpse into the simplistic production that emerged through Carl’s mastery of the 808 and the sonic value of restricting himself to this movement-defining tool.

This new ‘From Beyond’ package sees Carl lift and shape the original in his ‘C2 2023 Mix’, alongside a set of remixes from artists close to the hearts of Detroit and the Planet E community. Seth Troxler brings a subdued acid tinge to the package, while label regular Ataxia pays homage to the source material with renewed percussive energy, followed by a soulful reimagining courtesy of Admn.

Whether it’s through 30 years of his iconic Planet E imprint, his Party / After-Party sound and light installation now showing at LA’s MOCA, or his continued work as an advocate for Black-led creativity, Carl Craig’s mission remains the same: always represent Detroit and be the damn realest alive.
