LOCKJAW opens the journey with a somber but optimistic development through traffic. There are urgent, lively tones that verge on the dry before becoming squealing, while arpeggiators emerge from the white noise generated by long hi-hat tails to make way for clean synth work. Extended tones gently break through the filter, spreading out in front of shorter synth loops that shimmer and resonate with tight echoes.
AROUND enters with more punch and a more marked percussion, giving the feeling that something is coming and that the haze has been left behind. It functions as a prelude to arpeggiated bass tones that gently wind their way to menacing metallic chords and modulations, allowing the keyboards that follow to find their place before being pushed back into grooves and a reprise.
ADAPT builds a slow and steady groove, more clad than accented by metal-soaked chords, as if Basic Channel shared a bed with a fever. Vocal loops and melodic lines gradually escape the filter, while cymbals gently exhale and then disappear, merging with the reverberating chords and languid pads that interweave among diffuse echoes.
CONTACT slows down again but hits harder, unfolding expansive and sinister tones from the very beginning in true Carpenter style, suggesting that the time has come to escape Los Angeles. A feeling reinforced by vocal samples, pulsating synthesizers and a slower arpeggiated bass that serve as the basis for clean and melancholic strings and chords that perfectly close this soundscape of a dystopian future.
