Like some of electronic music’s most pioneering and memorable records, Josh Wink’s 1995 classic, “Higher State of Consciousness,” is fiendishly simple and – as the artist himself recently made clear – virtually impossible to recreate. Like Phuture’s seminal “Acid Tracks,” it’s a simple yet devastating exercise in TB-303 use, where wild, tremendously funky acid lines twist and morph over a thumping breakbeat and metronomic electronic drum hits.

Here it gets the Strictly Rhythm reissue treatment, pressed at high volume for maximum dancefloor impact, with the essential and well-known “Tweekin’ Acid Funk” version (the one that became a global hit) accompanied by a later downtempo mix, perfect for head-nodding listening, that seems tailor-made for Ibiza chill-out sessions (think Café del Mar, Café Mambo, etc.).
