Tom Rowlands - We Are Nothing / All Night [Phantasy Sound]

Visionary producer and one half of pioneering electronic duo The Chemical Brothers, Tom Rowlands, returns to Phantasy with We Are Nothing / All Night, his first track-oriented solo material since his last appearance on Erol Alkan’s historic London label in 2013 with Through Me / Nothing But Pleasure.

Once again, Rowlands presents a double A-side single, pressing two new progressive productions to vinyl. Extensively tested in The Chemical Brothers' DJ sets around the world, We Are Nothing unfolds an expansive structure that spans decades of fascination and reinvention of house music and psychedelia. Imaginatively utilizing a sample from Canadian artist Bill Bissett, Rowlands builds upon the poet's existential phrases a soaring acid catharsis, punctuated by flashes of soul, analogue bursts, and an enveloping groove.

All Night, meanwhile, adopts a distinct, perhaps unexpected, rhythm. Here, Rowlands' unparalleled studio instinct veers entirely in another direction, employing a scorching tempo that embraces the analogue experimentation characteristic of his work, while celebrating the always cutting-edge nature of electronic music. The result is a hypnotic and dizzying piece, befitting both the label and the artist.

Tom Rowlands will deliver a rare solo DJ set at Glastonbury’s Stonebridge Bar on Friday, June 27, as part of Bugged Out’s 30th-anniversary celebrations.
