Detroit pioneer Terrence Dixon returns to Tresor Records to kick off 2026 with When Stars Remember. Despite a career spanning over thirty years, Dixon has always maintained a lower profile than many of his contemporaries. He has given few interviews, preferring to express himself through his music, with enigmatic titles suggesting the ideas and reflections behind each composition.
However, When Stars Remember shows him stepping up. “I wanted to get closer to the dance floor. I consciously made this work sound more powerful… I conceived it specifically with Tresor in mind.” And the EP lives up to that intention: while retaining many of the hallmarks of a Terrence Dixon production, percussion plays a more prominent role, and the synth arpeggios are so bold that the term “monumental” seems more appropriate than “minimalist.”
“I put three or four sounds on the same track, layering them to create something bigger,” he comments on Mono Collapse, the opening track. However, that description could apply to any of the pieces on the release, as all four build hypnotic structures by combining sonic layers that generate something greater than the sum of their parts. “If you keep the same tones overlapping and repeat them over and over, after a while your brain transforms them on its own; you start to hear many things: details you didn’t perceive at first, even things that might not even be there.”
Absence is also a central theme of the EP, especially what Dixon calls “The Forgotten”: fundamental principles such as common sense, trust, loyalty, honesty, and respect—values he believes are increasingly absent in contemporary life.
“This world is different… love is gone. But I love everyone. I think, secretly, everyone loves everyone, they just don’t know it yet.”
With When Stars Remember, Terrence Dixon delivers a deeply human and thoughtful work that combines the power of the dance floor with an introspective look at values, perception, and the human condition.
