Athenian—or rather, Gethenian—Stef Mendesidis takes techno into sci-fi horror territory, inaugurating his own label, agency, and event series, Exaiter. Representing the same Greek scene that has been his stomping ground since 2015, tracks like Exaiter and Spectral Transmission show an affinity for backroom shadow play and sonic oddities; the latter is notable for its music-box-like glimmers set against ventilated steel rhythms—a strange but captivating combination. And despite the name, the B-side, Techno, is far from generic: it encapsulates the full essence of a sound in an echoing, three-dimensional dub. Terra Nihil further baffles with raw clouds of arpeggiated chords that overflow, breaking clocks, enveloped in toxic mists and almost lithospheric subterranean pressure.
