Originally released in 1994, the album represents a transitional moment for Robert Hood after leaving behind his previous collaborations within Underground Resistance. Hood moved forward by discovering the power of true minimalism: deep soul expressed through a simplicity that demonstrated how much could be achieved with so little. The devastating rhythms of this album build the unique spirit of this sound and influenced subsequent generations.

"I was faced with the challenge of giving continuity to 'Minimal Nation'. I cancelled all my tour dates that summer, set up my studio in my living room, and started working on 'Internal Empire'. My intention was to create something clearly different. Looking out my living room window in Detroit and watching people pass by gave me a new perspective. It made me look at the world within myself. Years later, I'm still discovering."
