Fade to Grey by Visage is a monumental piece in the annals of 80s synth-pop and new wave dance music. Released in November 1980, this song quickly became the band's most successful single, reaching number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and number 1 in Germany and Switzerland. The unique blend of English and French lyrics, with Steve Strange singing the English verses and Brigitte Arens the French chorus, gave it a cosmopolitan touch that resonated with the emerging New Romantic fashion movement of the early 80s. Musically, Fade to Grey is an essential example of synth-pop, characterized by its strong melodic hooks, danceable rhythms, and iconic synthesizer riffs. The song was initially conceived as an instrumental by Billy Currie and Chris Payne during soundchecks on Gary Numan's 1979 tour, before transforming into the masterpiece we know today. The minimalist lyrics, depicting a lonely man in a deserted train station, evoke a sense of melancholy and existential reflection. Its enduring legacy is evident in its continued influence and the various re-edits and remixes over the years. Now, in 2024, Pax Romax pays tribute to Fade to Grey with this version. The instruments were played and produced by Marc Hartman, the vocals by the famous Italo Disco singer and producer Brian Ice, and the spoken word in French by Anoosh. Track A2 is a dark deconstructive remix by Marc Hartman.
