Kalita is proud to announce the first official reissue of Mpharanyana & The Peddlers’ 1979 South African disco and funk recordings Disco and Freak Out With Botsotso, backed by a devastating extended Disco edit from Rotterdam-based DJ and producer Jamie 3:26.

Born on 15 November 1949 in Kattlehong, South Africa, Jacob ‘Mpharanyana’ Radebe was one of the country’s greatest musicians, boasting a legacy of legendary soul, jazz and disco albums before his untimely death in August 1979 at the mere age of twenty-nine.

On this occasion, Kalita selects his sought-after disco and funk recordings Disco and Freak Out With Botsotso, both taken from his elusive final 1979 album Hela Ngwanana, for reissue for the first time in forty years. Featuring Bakithi Kumalo – session bassist for Paul Simon and Herbie Hancock – and Themba Mokena, known for his work on Dick Khoza’s Chapita, on lead guitar, these recordings bring together some of the country’s most prominent musicians, resulting in a glorious sound.

With the original album fetching exorbitant prices on the rare occasions it appears for sale, the time has come to share this gem with the world once more.

Pressed on a loud-cut 12” and backed by an extended Disco edit courtesy of Jamie 3:26, this release is undoubtedly yet another undeniable hit from the Kalita label.
