Following on from the release of the single ‘Intentions’, Soul Quest are pleased to present a multitude of remixes alongside a resonant live version of the original cut, thus providing a vibrant package of interpretations that further enriches the soulful sound of the label.
‘Intentions’ in its original form was the result of a joint musical adventure between label head Max Sinal, long-time producer and collaborator Kingcrowney, and vocalist Liv East. The track is pure Soul Quest, with emotive and subtle chords entwined with a gentle yet impactful rhythm section. East provides inspired vocal work, her angelic voice floats on the breeze, illuminating every corner, whilst the totality of the musical package conveys only the most heartfelt and joyous of emotions. It feels natural then that the original cut should be explored and reinterpreted by some of the most prominent producers of the moment, and with this album of remixes all possible facets of ‘Intentions’ are displayed.
First up is the extraordinary producer Frits Wentink, who brings the atmosphere firmly to the club. Wentink breaks down all the elements with surgical precision, focusing attention on the core progression by adding new repetitive chordal elements that circle around the kick. As the track shifts pace, lines emerge that grow in stature, with plenty of time for breakdowns that capture all the emotional brilliance of the original.
Next up is Dallas deep house legend JT Donaldson, who presents not one but two remixes. The first maintains the progression of the original but adds exciting elements. The inclusion of a powerful bass gives depth to the underlying current, while the more stripped-down sections allow the flow to travel through very deep atmospheres. The ‘Dub’ version reduces East's vocal presence to focus more attention on the groove and melodic sequences, and as a counterpart to the first remix, the duo encapsulates everything one could desire in a soulful house track.
Next is Flying Moth, with a more hypnotic twist, where broken and skipped drums create melodic pools and caverns. East's voice resonates through space and time, inviting further escapism as the track grows and transforms with each passing minute, creating a delightful and intoxicating soundscape.
Finally, to close, comes the live version, which brings the energy to a beautiful leisurely pace. The rhythm section takes the form of a complete percussive display, which expresses itself softly amidst a sea of exquisite guitar licks, light chords, and brass. East is the star of the show here, her voice anchors the constantly evolving backing section, which moves and sways with wonderful naturalness.
‘Intentions’ as a single contained all the sonic qualities that Soul Quest values, and with this collection of remixes and live versions, its meaning is further enriched. From imaginative reinterpretations to inspiring soundscapes.
