This is not your typical Marshall Jefferson record, but that is by no means a criticism. In its edited 24-minute format on side A, ‘Yellow Meditation for the Dance Generation’ is —as its name suggests— an immersive and epic experience in which the great Chicago house icon recites meditation instructions over a slowed-down, minimalist, and deeply enveloping reinterpretation of his little-known mid-80s deep house track, ‘Vibe’. It's certainly out of the ordinary, but it's also magnificent: ambient house for the smartphone generation.

On side B, French producer Joakim contributes his reinterpretation, starting with a ‘Vertical Remix’ that subtly evolves from psychedelic ambient into a hypnotic deep house, loaded with percussion and effects, before closing with a truly sublime nine-minute ambient new age interpretation: the ‘Horizontal Remix (Edit)’. A truly brilliant package.
