Manteca - Rhythm and Flavour [Mr Bongo]

We are proud to present our reissue of the highly sought-after 1978 album Ritmo Y Sabor, by Cuban bongo master Manteca. A deep and hypnotic sonic journey through Afro-Cuban rhythms and mambo, ideal for getting completely lost in. Originally released in 1978, there are several editions of the record published on labels such as GRC, Desca Records, and Sound Triangle Records. Raw, lo-fi, and unadorned, this work is a pulsating blast of instrumental magic between Latin jazz and dance music.

Composed mostly of only percussion and bass, the album features Carlos “Rico” Ramírez on bass, Carlos Patato on congas, Nelson Padrón on timbales, and Lázaro Pla, aka Manteca, as bandleader. A Cuban legend, Manteca rose to fame playing with Ernesto Lecuona and the Cuban Boys. Although he participated in numerous recordings in his native country, there are very few where he features as a prominent soloist or project leader.

Ritmo Y Sabor is a whirlwind of percussive brilliance, full of energy regardless of the tempo of each piece. It has an instant ability to get you moving; the grooves come alive with each new rhythm added. Just listen to Afro Funky, which lives up to its name: a Latin funk session with breaks, accompanied by an excellent walking bassline that serves as a foundation for the percussionists to improvise freely. On the other hand, Rumbón En Casa De Cando is fast and frantic, perfect for jazz dance lovers, while Sabor A Mantecado keeps you on edge with a hypnotic bassline and mesmerizing rhythmic interplay. Finally, Cosa De Manteca is another gem of raw and powerful Latin funk, with relentless percussion always guided by the groove.
