A unique and personal collection, both euphoric and melancholic, British electronic art-pop outfit Hot Chip provide the perfect antidote to these strange and uncertain times with their latest installment in the acclaimed, artist-curated LateNightTales series.
As well as featuring new music from the band, they have handpicked tracks from some of the 21st century’s most fascinating artists, spanning pulsating electronic rhythms, hypnotic grooves and experimental ambience.
Led by founders Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard, Hot Chip are one of the UK’s most interesting and beloved projects. Since the release of their debut album Coming On Strong in 2004, they have received a Grammy nomination for Ready for the Floor and a Mercury Prize nod for The Warning. Their seventh studio album, A Bath Full of Ecstasy, released last year, was acclaimed by both critics and audiences worldwide.
Hot Chip’s LateNightTales opens with Christina Vantzou’s minimalist beauty At Dawn, then morphs into the first of four exclusive songs from the band: the ethereal and transcendent Nothing’s Changed. Rhythm & Sound featuring Cornell Campbell then deliver the heavy dub classic King In My Empire.
The journey continues with Pale Blue’s Have You Passed Through This Night, a silky cold wave disco track, while Suzanne Kraft’s Femme Cosmic and Fever Ray’s To The Moon And Back bring doses of viscous synth-pop. Also featured are the energetic Much To Touch from Bolton-born, Berlin-based producer Planningtorock, and an ethereal cover of the Velvet Underground’s Candy Says by Hot Chip themselves, which adds an air of displacement and detachment.
Further highlights include an appearance from synth-pop author Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith with Who I Am & Why I Am Where, new material from Alexis’ “other” project, About Group — with its improvisational approach — plus the adventurous Workaround Two from electronic experimentalist Beatrice Dillon and the evocative Ode from German composer Nils Frahm. The closing duties are left to Alexis’ father, with an elegant excerpt from James Joyce’s daring Finnegans Wake.
The LateNightTales series launched in 2001 with Fila Brazillia at the controls, mixing the first of what would become the go-to choice for music lovers around the world. Since then, it has featured installments from artists such as The Flaming Lips, Floating Points, David Holmes, Bonobo, Jon Hopkins, Röyksopp and many more.
