Toy Tonics Music Berlin presents "Para Mytho Disco," the second album by "Kapote," the label's founder and creative director, Mathias Modica.

Keyboardist, DJ, producer, music lover, graphic designer, multi-instrumentalist, subculture impresario, and artist (formerly known as Munk from Gomma Records).

Kapote & Toy Tonics

In recent years, Kapote has primarily excelled by building the Toy Tonics label with his friends, developing a platform for new, positive, and quality dance music with a human touch. Toy Tonics is the complete opposite of the dark, saturated Techno and Trance sound that predominated in recent years.

Toy Tonics' warm and welcoming music represents a new vibe that charms a young, diverse, stylish, and culturally interested generation. Toy Tonics has become the key label for this movement. (In 2024, Toy Tonics organized 150 events in 18 countries, gathering over 150,000 people and achieving 90 million streams on their songs).

Toy Tonics is more than a music label: it's an audiovisual universe, a community, almost a movement. Based on a positive attitude and aesthetic diversity, it blends musicality with DJ culture, analog with electronic music, ideas from the past with current sounds to create something new. It connects dance music with graphic design, art, and underground fashion.

Kapote and his team release vinyl, posters, t-shirts, art zines, and organize exhibitions and parties.

From Underground Project to Global Phenomenon

Toy Tonics started in Berlin as a niche project, but is now a key label in the house, wild-style disco, and organic dance music scene. It is probably one of the biggest electronic music phenomena in Berlin, alongside Keinemusik and Live from Earth.

It all happened fast: in 2020, Kapote's team began organizing small parties in alternative spaces in Berlin, called "Toy Tonics Jams." These parties became the talk of the town, leading the crew to clubs like Griesmühle and Panorama Bar. Soon, they started getting invited to international clubs and festivals, such as SONAR (sharing the stage with Kaytranada and DJ Tennis), the KALA festival, and the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Today, Toy Tonics has a residency at Berlin's Panorama Bar and sold-out events at leading European clubs like Phonox in London, Rex Club in Paris, and Tunnel in Milan. Toy Tonics has become the reference for a new generation of music-loving dancers, similar to what Gomma Records, Kapote's previous label (2003-2015), was for the "indie dance" scene in the 2000s (along with DFA and Output Records).

A Multicultural Movement

Kapote has created a multicultural movement, collaborating with graphic designers, photographers, and illustrators from the Berlin scene. They publish the Toy Tonics Pocket Poster magazine, as well as designer posters and t-shirts. They also organize pop-up galleries that blend music and art, both in underground spaces in Berlin and in museums and galleries across Europe.

Toy Tonics has been invited by institutions such as the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Triennale Museum in Berlin, and Milan Design Week to create events.

Kapote's new album

"Para Mytho Disco" includes 12 tracks with a unique style, based on dance music, but going far beyond. This album is a futuristic blend of sounds, far removed from the dark, monotonous techno of Berlin. Instead, Kapote creates warm and friendly atmospheres, full of sonic colors and small musical details.

The influence of his jazz piano training and his heritage as the son of a classical composer are evident. Before becoming a DJ and electronic music producer, he played in bands from the age of 13.

The album is full of emotional chord progressions, bass lines inspired by 70s fusion jazz, and syncopated rhythms influenced by African-American dance music. There are also references to Japanese electronic music (Yellow Magic Orchestra), 80s Synthwave, and 90s electronics (Squarepusher and Luke Vibert).

Kapote plays keyboards, bass, flute, percussion, and synthesizers, and even sings on some tracks. The complexity of the arrangements makes this music captivating and always interesting, inviting listeners to discover new details after several listens.

Kapote's Career

Before founding Toy Tonics, Kapote ran the Gomma label and produced four albums under the name Munk, in addition to working with artists such as Peaches, Nick McCarthy (Franz Ferdinand), The Rammellzee, Asia Argento, and LCD Soundsystem (listen to "Kick Out The Chairs," a collaboration with James Murphy). He also produced the first three albums by WhoMadeWho and created music for art and fashion projects (Margiela, Prada, Colette).

Since 2015, with Toy Tonics, Kapote has promoted the sound of young producers (Coeo, Cody Currie, Gee Lane, Barbara Boeing, Sam Ruffillo). He also founded the sublabel Kryptox, dedicated to new forms of jazz and neoclassical sounds.

As Kapote, his releases have been limited: his debut album "What It Is" (2019), the EP "Electric Slide" (2022), and a collaboration with Sam Ruffillo, "Robot Salsa."

Despite being an underground phenomenon, his music has always been a favorite of big names in the scene, such as Harvey, Chromeo, Moodymann, Jennifer Cardini, Gerd Janson, Blessed Madonna, Justice, and Laurent Garnier, among others.
