Jimpster & Philippa - All I Wanted EP [Freerange Records]

With the arrival of its 300th release, Freerange celebrates a new milestone and does so with an EP in which label founder Jimpster joins forces with Philippa to deliver three original tracks that encapsulate the label's sound across (almost) three decades.

With recent releases on Slothboogie and Razor-N-Tape, remixes for Roach Motel on Faith, and for James Curd and Robert Owens on Pronto, not to mention her recent Panorama Bar debut, it's clear that Philippa is making her mark. This Berlin-based New Zealand producer has forged a unique style: organic, deep, and musical, which has captivated names like Terry Farley, Aroop Roy, DJ Spen, and Dave Lee.

The main track, "All I Wanted," showcases both producers merging their influences with a distinctive sound from each. Punchy kicks and a solid bassline support pulsating synthesizers and MON's fragmented and looped vocals, adding an enveloping rhythm to the track.

"Dreaming," featuring the wonderful vocals of Care, opts for a floating atmosphere, with shimmering synthesizers and grainy Rhodes keys layered to create a richly textured production. The result is a powerful yet subtle and refined track, perfect for both a relaxed house playlist and a demanding dance floor at 4 AM.

Closing the EP, "Say What" embarks on a UK Garage-influenced excursion with jazzy undertones. Broken beats, a bouncy square wave bass, and big, bold synth chords combine to create a track that sounds both retro and contemporary.
