Nothing represents the mid-nineties more than this track, “i9”. Not because it was hugely popular, but mostly for the reason of its creation. In 1995, Techno Music was still growing. Still being introduced to new listeners around the world. It was just beginning to break away from its parental connection to Rave Culture, which had started some ten years earlier, to acquire its own characteristics. But as Rave had primarily taken root in certain countries in Europe, such as the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands, by 1995, all of Europe and now also America were ablaze with this style of Techno Music. It was intense, we were intense. And the music we made to be played was relentless.
By then, the light, cheerful 4/4 beats of the mid-eighties had transformed into jackhammers bleeding noise. Especially designed to infiltrate brains and leave the prisoners alive. It was the dark matter we had all been waiting for. The substance we needed to have. And with that special substance came amazing parties and events. DJs strategically packed their heavy vinyl crates as if preparing for an African safari, with ammunition that would test any sound system. For that night at the Liquid Room in Tokyo, I knew I needed something that would end any doubt as to whether Techno Music had arrived. I wanted to have something that marked the end and the beginning of something else. A new way of thinking about dance music.
That something else was called “i9”.
This unreleased and limited-edition version of “i9” is a new 2025 remix by Jeff Mills from the original tracks, which marks the beginning of the 30th Anniversary of the “Jeff Mills: Live At Liquid Room” Mix CD, where “i9” was first played.
