Ambolley is revered in Ghana as the Simigwahene, the King of Simigwa-Highlife. For his deep, soulful and funky sound, he is also sometimes known as the “James Brown of Ghana.” And not without reason. His fusion of Highlife, Funk, Jazz, Soul, and proto-Rap was, and still is, electrifying.

Born in 1947 in the vibrant port city of Sekondi-Takoradi, Western Ghana, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley’s musical journey began with early influences from his father’s military band flute and local highlife music. He learned music from great artists like Sammy Larteh and Ebo Taylor, with whom he played in the Uhuru Dance Band. Together they founded the Apagya Show Band in 1974. Today, after more than 40 years active in music and numerous albums, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley is also a living legend.

Throughout his career, Ambolley has demonstrated a remarkable ability to fuse diverse musical influences. During his collaboration with Agogo Records since 2017, Ambolley has continued to push boundaries and explore new musical territories.
