George Duke - I Want You For Myself (Tom Moulton Mix) / Brazilian Love Affair [Epic]

Two timeless George Duke gems, ‘I Want You for Myself’ and ‘Brazilian Love Affair,’ get the official reissue and remaster treatment.

First up, ‘I Want You for Myself,’ the R&B-tinged jazz-funk gem from 1979, brings together all the ingredients of a classic within Duke’s illustrious catalogue. A funky guitar and exuberant percussion perfectly accompany Lynn Davis’s fabulous, soul-charged vocals, making for a sweeter-than-most love song. A Duke classic wouldn’t be complete without a scorching keyboard solo, and on ‘I Want You for Myself’ he showcases his talents in spades. Legendary Tom Moulton takes on editing duties, transforming it into a 10-minute exploration of this powerful fusion, extending and enhancing elements of the mix, as well as adding an epic breakdown only he knows how to do.

On the B-side, the relentless ‘Brazilian Love Affair’ is a Latin American jazz-funk classic. Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, Duke called upon a host of great guest musicians, each bringing something unique. From Airto Moreira's mastery on Latin percussion, to Byron Miller’s thumping bass and Roland Bautista’s saturated guitar. Duke complements all of this with his ethereal vocals and an otherworldly Rhodes solo. Heavily sampled, much-loved, this is a true masterpiece that deserves a place in any collection.
