Having lived and worked in the UK, USA, and Colombia over a career spanning 20+ years, Quantic is an artist whose reputation has been built on his singular connection and vibrant musical exchange with local scenes and cultures across the world. His electronic discography is vast, spanning two decades and traversing solo productions and intimate collaborations to broad ensemble projects. Under aliases such as Quantic, The Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Limp Twins, Flowering Inferno, OndatrĂłpica, and many more, the multi-instrumentalist, DJ, composer, and producer Will Holland has released over twenty studio albums in addition to countless EPs and singles.
Now Quantic turns to his unparalleled and varied circle of musical collaborators for his DJ-Kicks compilation, which radiates with precisely such friends and family energy. The mix bursts with unreleased exclusives and puts the art of curation at its heart, inviting listeners to delve deeper for themselves into the tracks and sounds that resonate most. Holland includes a wide array of new material, featuring unreleased music by Quantic, as well as one of his other aliases: Sobredosis.
Having recorded together as Transgressors, he spotlights JJ from The Poets of Rhythm. Similarly, the drummer from London band The Heliocentrics, Malcolm Catto, played in The Quantic Soul Orchestra in the early 2000s, and a raw track by the band features at the start of the mix. But the ties don't end there. Having mixed their album Bring Backs, Holland welcomes Mist's instrumental jazz to this DJ-Kicks outing, followed by a whistled dance collaboration by JKriv —featuring Gabriel Oliveira—, with whom he shared his early days as a bassist for the New York live house ensemble Tortured Soul. Quantic also brings his Colombian contemporary Frente Cumbiero into the mix, with whom he formed the tropical supergroup Ondatrópica.
As a selector who is often invited to play at sunset, Quantic channeled that same energy into the rhythm of the mix. “I love it when people suddenly realize they're already deep into the night… and this mix really propels you into pretty high tempos of bass music, dub, and cumbia.” Beyond showcasing projects, the mix encapsulates Quantic's tempo-shifting DJ style, which has garnered him a strong following over the last decade. About the compilation's sonic journey, which he compares to boarding a vessel, he says: “you go down a river and end up disembarking somewhere else… it's also a nice way to stylistically encapsulate what I've been doing as a DJ in the last few decades, while highlighting people I admire.”
This DJ-Kicks edition is the latest chapter in Quantic's ever-evolving artistic journey, an accompaniment for those moments when dusk fades into darkness. A tribute to an unparalleled artistic path within the universe of dance music. Will Holland's constant dedication to a full range of melodic and percussive expression, along with his relentless collaborative drive, is what makes his DJ-Kicks edition such a special rarity.
