Modeselektor—aka Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary—are one of the most original acts to emerge from Berlin’s techno underground. Across more than three decades of astounding work—spanning cult labels, critically acclaimed albums and EPs, and era-defining releases as part of Moderat—the duo remain at the top of their game, with as keen an appetite as ever for discovering the freshest global electronic music. In 2025, the same year that DJ-Kicks and !K7 Records celebrate their 30th and 40th anniversaries respectively, they are finally ready to deliver their edition of this acclaimed mix series.

Modeselektor’s passion and determination are evident on DJ-Kicks. Taking part in this long-running series was always a bucket list item for them. This year, finally, everything aligned, and they set to work on their take on the compilation.

Taking a non-linear approach has always been the duo’s hallmark. No two tunes sound alike on DJ-Kicks, which means the magic happens precisely in the liminal spaces between songs. This rhythmically enveloping release came together in a matter of days. It features 22 tracks, including two original Modeselektor cuts, plus field recordings made while on tour—a lively conversation recorded in a studio in Kingston, Jamaica can be heard at the very end of the mix. True to form, they weave an impressive blend of styles. Throughout the set, Szary’s selections skew ethereal and beatless, while Bronsert focuses on the dance floor.

The beauty is in the details—in listening to the mix again and again, and discovering new nuances and sonic hooks with each play. Despite its contemporary approach, it has a timeless quality, like Modeselektor and DJ-Kicks themselves. Both are totems of Berlin’s rich, ever-changing electronic culture. Decades on, they remain as relevant as ever. “Don’t skip any tracks,” Szary joked when asked how to listen to the mix. “Just enjoy it.”
