DJ Koze —with his kind and at times slightly melancholic view of the world— is one of the great authors of current club music and one of the few DJs with international activity who dares to make music with relevance beyond the dancefloor.
During the 70-minute journey of his DJ Kicks —the 50th edition—, Kosi Kos manages to establish a uniform color, even though the genres alternate in a way rarely heard in a CD mix: Madlib's refined hip hop, Berghain's brutalist techno, timeless compositions, ethereal indie pop, and atypical pieces that oscillate between absurdity and melancholy. Koze's disregard for stylistic constraints presents an enormous challenge. For this reason, almost all tracks are edited to a greater or lesser extent, and one of them is completely rhymed (Session Victim: Hyuwee).
Koze explains it like this: "I didn't want to boast sophisticated knowledge, but rather try to weave some gems that would make sense to anyone, even those who aren't necessarily music nerds." But it's a digression that can be trusted, also because it approaches the term "mix" from another angle and doesn't even try to make things fit that don't fit: "During the day I don't need to listen to anything mixed to tempo. I focus on making sure it works harmonically; the idea is more to create the impression of a radio show, as people like John Peel did so uniquely. There is a gigantic cosmos of music and everything passes through my filter."
