Demuir - New Spirit EP [Heist Recordings]

House music doesn’t get much funkier than on Demuir’s ‘New Spirit’ EP. Whether it’s the classic sampling of the title track—a tribute to his mother—or the funky bass and vocal chops of ‘Ain’t No Stoppin’, Demuir brings an unstoppable groove on his second outing for Heist.

The man behind so many great house records has kept himself pretty busy building his own following, openly debating the role big platforms play and the tight control they exert over talent. Rather than follow the standard path, Demuir has chosen to take the winding route of forging his own audience through his production classes, engineering work, and music releases on artist-centric channels like Patreon.

His recent move from Toronto to Chicago fits perfectly with the sound Demuir delivers on his first Heist record since his 2019 classic, ‘Werq, Feel, Gruv, Vogue’. Those six years were totally worth the wait: the ‘New Spirit’ EP is a perfectly balanced blend of creativity, confidence, and character. Demuir’s sound is immediately apparent throughout the release, and he’s not afraid to make bold choices. Each track has its own identity, its own space within the record, and that’s precisely what makes this work stand out in the best possible way.

The forward-thinking grooves, precise mixing, and classic use of soulful samples are a true joy to listen to and dance to. There are nods to the ‘90s New York sound (New Spirit), disco-soul-tinged grooves characteristic of his new city (Ain’t No Stoppin’), laid-back, summery melodies (No Minions Allowed), and deep dub grooves with plenty of bass (Whatchu Want Is All I Got) that remind everyone that Demuir is a true master of contemporary house.
