Dam Swindle have been helping define the sound of underground house for a decade, especially through their Heist imprint. The duo specialize in timeless sounds free of passing trends, rich in dancefloor dynamics and influenced by everything from disco to techno and everything in between. They are known as vinyl diggers who have played the world’s most cultured clubs. Their recent track Allright (Just A Tribute), released for Phonica's 20-year celebration, has been widely acclaimed by DJs this summer at festivals, and now they present two of their studio gems for their third full release on Aus.
This EP is the second of a four-part EP series by different artists to commemorate the 200th outing on Will Saul’s influential Aus Music label. It is a label that has been era-defining, hosting some of the scene’s brightest stars long before they became famous. Since its launch in 2006, the label has remained dedicated to putting out dancefloor-ready music with a refined edge, from deep and melodic house to early bass-driven post-dubstep fusions.
The EP kicks off with 'The Last Time', a laid-back deep house sound with passionate vocals that tug at the emotional heartstrings. Soft synth touches percolate through the mix, making for a captivating and good-vibes-only effect. Next up is 'Come Back', a catchy house track with sticky synths and some garage shuffle in the drum hits. It's fresh and full of neon colors that ooze soul.
Influential Aus Music member K-LONE, who is a benchmark for new-school house and garage, presents a remix that follows his two-part EP series on the label. His version of 'The Last Time' is typically skillful, with soft chords that swirl around the punching garage house kicks. The distant vocal, cavernous bass, and melancholic tone make it another classic.
Last but not least, Chloé Robinson and DJ ADHD are frequent collaborators on labels such as fabric Originals and Chloé’s Pretty Weird imprint, where they serve up powerful, bass-heavy sounds. Their version of 'Come Back' is expertly streamlined. It plays and pleases with a mixture of dirty bass wobbles, sensual drums, and melodic chords that are fun and naturally effective.
