The Coastal Commission – “The Conversation”

Le Conversation was a French bakery located directly across the street from the old PCH studio “The Hall of Records,” situated at the very end of Melrose Avenue on the cusp of Hollywood. I had moved down from the sunny shores of Carpinteria and brought all the gear with me right to the edge of Hollyweird. Many times you could find me stumbling over there on a Saturday or Sunday at sunrise, bloodshot eyed with whisky breath, looking for some fresh coffee and a chocolate éclair after an all-night session making beats.

Around that time we had started working on some Drum & Bass tracks for my label CRIMESCENE and were experimenting with different techniques.

One weekend I was hosting Goldie’s old producer and Moving Shadow label head Rob Playford, along with MC Jakes, EZ Rollers, and Calyx for a festival right outside of Los Angeles. After taking them to breakfast at Le Conversation, we all went over to my house to blaze a little and Rob gave me some pointers on making more growling and aggressive basslines.

The following week we went to work.

During the process we watched Gene Hackman's “The Conversation” about an obsessive spy setting up outdoor mics to catch a dangerous individual, and also caught Optical spinning with Ed Rush a few blocks up at Johnny Depp's Viper Room. After an all night Soul Caliber session, Matt and Ben gave us some ideas and "The Conversation" was born shortly after.

A saturated bassline, dub bleeps loaded with echo sampled from a crosswalk in New Zealand and processed with space echoes and old Roland delays gave the track an otherworldly feel. The 303 chugs along, breaking down into haunting Zulu chants as the bleeps weave in and out and the track rumbles like you're floating through space. Definitely a late-night piece.

Originally released on the Beatnonstop label and fetching some pretty high prices on Discogs, we've now brought it back on Pacific Coast House with a remaster by the great Martin Iveson.

Boeing – “Currency”

Finally this track has seen the light of day.

Boeing, hailing from Argentina, blessed us with this track which for years was a secret weapon of DJ Doc Martin. I paired it with “The Conversation” on this piece of wax because it also has that extraterrestrial dancing in outer space feeling.

The bassline is absolutely huge on a sound system and those undulating bleeps keep popping in and out until a monster synth line comes in and takes you up to the ceiling.

They say the Wiggle boys absolutely smashed it on the floor alongside Swag and Grant Dell.

Only 10 white labels existed before this full release.

Run, don't walk to get your hands on this; a true gem for your arsenal.
