Throughout 2025, Tresor Records will digitally reactivate, in chronological order, the vast catalogue that Detroit house and techno pioneer Blake Baxter released on the label, beginning with 1992’s Dream Sequence, followed closely by his 1995 album, Endless Reflection. To inaugurate and celebrate this retrospective of one of the genre’s true founders — an artist whose relationship with Tresor stretches back almost to its very beginnings — the label announces a special 12” release, Dream Sequence X, which includes remastered tracks from his early years and shines a light on the tougher side of his output.
Initially inspired by post-punk and funk, Baxter began making music as early as 1985. By 1991 he had already released several seminal records on classic labels like Underground Resistance, KMS Records and Incognito Records, as well as contributing multiple tracks to the influential British compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, which was many European listeners' first introduction to the genre, cemented the term techno, and launched the international careers of many of its participants.
In 1992 Baxter made his first trip to play Tresor, as part of Underground Resistance's first European tour, thus laying the foundations for the now legendary Berlin-Detroit connection. This visit led to a long and fruitful collaboration with the club's then newly established label, beginning with Jeff Mills, Mad Mike Banks and Robert Hood as X-101, as well as Baxter's Dream Sequence, from which the first four tracks included in the new 12” are drawn.
Although he would later become especially renowned for his sensual vocals and for a softer, more house-leaning musical style, these early productions are heavier: classic 90s techno that reveals the influence of industrial, post-punk, and pop of the era. Indeed, the collection functions almost as a time capsule: groovy 909 drums, intense rave-spirited synth stabs, classic soul and breakbeat samples, plus the synthetic voice of the Speak & Spell; characteristic sounds and styles of that era appear throughout the record. All tracks have been remastered by Manmade Mastering, bringing new vitality and definition for the contemporary dancefloor.
In a world where longevity is hard to come by and superlatives are thrown around all too easily, it is still hard to overstate the enduring influence Blake Baxter has had on modern music. His vision can be heard in today's electronics and pop, and with this series of remasters there has never been a better time for the world to hear this legacy directly from its source.
