Rotterdam’s Bouman Records — a label run by one of the city’s deepest of deep house heads, Jurgen Bourman — is rather selective about what it puts out on wax, which is why every 12-inch deserves attention. The latest — the fourth overall — comes from exiled Mancunian Matthew Jesus, aka Black Eyes, a producer renowned for developing a Detroit-influenced deep house sound he calls “Hydro-trip”.

That sound — pure machine soul, weighty grooves, and intergalactic intent — can be heard throughout the EP’s four tracks, from the immersive and contemplative shuffle of “Scub” and the ultra-deep hypnotism of “Pressure From The Deep,” where atmospheric hand percussion patterns grab the attention, to the more jazzy reverie of the morning roller “Who’s In The Deep End” and the warm delight of “Atlantic Philosophy.”
