For the second release on his own Oblique imprint, Ben Buitendijk returns to the sound that he had only previously hinted at on his well-received Promised Land (Mosaic) and on a recent remix for Subwax.
This more dub-oriented approach is the common thread of Oblique's second release, titled Past and Present EP. Overall, this work delves into deeper territories than its predecessor, thereby revealing distinct facets of the label founder's taste that perhaps had been underexposed until now.
Roots functions as a sublime opener. Dramatic effects intertwine over a well-constructed drum pattern that fits exceptionally with the almost volcanic, bubbling sound of the delay-laden synths that float throughout the track. Side Stepping represents a change of atmosphere. While maintaining the spacious and dub-oriented approach of the initial track, it conveys a lighter feel, with meticulously programmed percussions at the base and effect chains that seem even more present than before.
On the B-side, we find Apollo, another dubby stepper that subtly evolves into a gloomier journey, cleverly combining dramatic chords with delayed stab fragments and panned artifacts. Near Mint serves as the closer of the Past and Present EP. A spacious cut that respects the overall character of the release while gently delving into a more ethereal atmosphere, moving in perfect harmony with the pulsating bass hit that supports it.
