Achieving legendary status or defining an era in dance music is no easy feat. Its trends change so quickly that artists, genres, and labels come and go before you know it. That's why, with great pride and deserved justification, Yoshitoshi celebrates its 20th anniversary with a series of remix packages of its most iconic tracks.
After sweeping the Beatport charts with Uto Karem’s and Robosonic’s remixes of Eddie Amador’s House Music—the latter spending the last month in the overall top 5—the label launches its next masterstroke: a new version of Giv Me Luv, Alcatraz’s seminal anthem.
“We put a lot of thought into how we should program this 20th-anniversary project,” says Sharam, label head. “It made no sense to come out strong and then deflate, so we deliberately chose Alcatraz for this challenge. But the challenge didn’t end there; such a big track deserved an equally impactful remix, and I think we found the perfect person for the job…”
This is where the undeniable techno titan, Nicole Moudaber, comes in, who didn't hesitate to accept the challenge:
“I have so many memories of Giv Me Luv; it was one of my favorite tracks in my early clubbing days,” recalls Nicole. “When Yoshi mentioned the idea of me remixing it, I simply couldn’t say no. In fact, I was so familiar with the track that I already had many ideas about what I could, or should, do with it. As I worked on the remix, one of those ideas grew and grew: an extended breakdown that builds constantly, leading the memorable vocal to an intense climax and—hopefully—a moment of pure drama on the dancefloor.”
Her humble description doesn't do justice to the final result: a modern and masterful reinterpretation of the classic. Her unmistakable techno beats, dark and twisted stabs, and a restructuring of the bass lead to the aforementioned breakdown, which will undoubtedly rival any New Year's fireworks display. In fact, this track promises to be the soundtrack for many dancefloors transitioning into 2015.
And if that weren't enough, Yoshitoshi has also enlisted Tent Cantrelle to offer a perfect contrast: a deep house version that complements the power of Nicole's techno remix.
“We wanted a real dose of contemporary funk for the alternative mix,” concludes Sharam. “Yoshi has always explored the fine line between deep house and techno, perhaps more than ever in its early years, so this remix completes the package perfectly.”
