An acronym of its creator’s moniker, TYGAPAW’s third studio album is a deeply personal collection of music that builds worlds where queer and trans Black sisters and brothers can thrive, while also unifying dancefloors globally. A proposition that collective wisdom sets us free from the matrix of domination we live in.

The album unfolds as the newest chapter in TYGAPAW’s ongoing techno opera, maintaining a focus on Black women’s voices, which emerge as layered incantations rather than lyrics – powerful, haunting, sensual, and activating.

The album’s creation process began in 2023, as TYGAPAW (Dion McKenzie) was in the first year of their transition. The music reflects the intensity of that period, where they experienced de-platforming in response to their changing physical appearance. Tracks like “M32 Riddim” and “Helicopter hovers over my Crown Heights Apartment” feature accelerated rhythms intersecting with intense, siren-like synths, forming demanding compositions that evoke a state of heightened alert.

Throughout the album, however, relief appears in the form of TYGAPAW’s vocal collaborations, accomplices and chosen family, whose voices are treated with reverb and echo, a sonic footprint reminiscent of the pioneers in the legendary studios of Jamaica, TYGAPAW's homeland, reminding us that the past always informs the future.

It’s an album crafted first and foremost for the dancefloor, where joy, resistance, and integration with the natural body coexist, and every drop feels less like a climax and more like a transformation. Expect soul-piercing bass and synthesized melodic phrases that evoke the dancehall era of TYGAPAW’s youth, reconfigured into hypnotic melodies that shimmer over industrial kick drums designed to demand attention, reasserting Jamaica’s pioneering yet often unsung contribution to electronic music.

In the opening track, “Can I Live”, Precious Okoyomon’s words feel like the beginning of a ritual, setting the intention for the rest of the journey. As McKenzie expresses, their “work is about regeneration, rebooting, reconnecting with nature, and rebirth. That’s the tone I wanted to set at the top of the album.”

Ms. Carrie Stacks continues this thread of support in “Don’t Panic,” with heavily processed vocals over a beat inspired by another key element of the antidote to the oppression of isolation: Ballroom culture. “I feel like I found my queerness in Ballroom, so this track is very important to me.”

Echoes of New York’s Black queer nightlife also run through the rhythmic energy of “Exorcise the Language of Domination”, where Julianna Huxtable’s spoken word performance complements the music’s distinct movements and tones. “My producer brain thought this was the ideal track for Juliana’s vocals. I suggested to her, ‘What do you think about this one?’ She just went into her notes and picked some passages for the first section. From there, it was a year-long development process. It took time and space to evolve, but I think it’s one of the most powerful tracks on the album.”

London-based SUUTOO contributes the album’s only musical collaboration on “B2B,” a track born from sessions in McKenzie’s New York studio, where the goal was to connect and have fun—a respite from the demands of outside life.

The album closes with a double emotional punch on “Effects of Resistance” and “Black Trans Masculine Experience.” The former features South African scholar Khanyisile Mbongwa, drawing connections between Africa and the Black diaspora, while looking towards the future and calling for a shared sense of community.

The latter, an instrumental version of the track that appeared on the 2025 IMMIGRANT EP, offers a soft, deeply moving close, a space of peace and acceptance. This full-circle tone is also reflected in the cover photography, which revisits IMMIGRANT by finally revealing what was hidden: a portrait of the artist fully realized, a step towards true inner liberation.

TYGAPAW is sonically defiant throughout the album; bass frequencies feel tactile—more inhabited than heard—and catchy synth melodies linger long after each track ends. An overarching sound that insists on an urgent need for connection.

From Detroit to New York, Berlin to Jamaica, despite the geographical distance, this album reminds us that we remain in solidarity, recognizing that building meaningful worlds requires collective action and input, both personal and communal, if we are to move toward liberation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_cd3758ea-0449-4c82-bbe1-41cc87b8e66b.jpg?v=1782089492
