It's a rebirth. A reminder that music has always been about feeling, not files. A testament to ATA’s commitment to sound—the real sound—that should be lived with, worn out, and passed on like a cherished record from hand to hand.

The Lewis Express started as a modest idea: to pay tribute to the great soul-jazz recordings of the past. Inspired by luminaries like Ramsey Lewis, Les McCann, and Galt MacDermot, they sought to channel that unmistakable energy: the kind of jazz that moves your feet and hips first.

The core of the group is the rhythm section: Sam Hobbs on drums and Neil Innes—label founder—on bass, joined by Sam Bell on congas and John Ellis on piano and Wurlitzer. It would be unfair to highlight any one over the rest when the band’s sound is so cohesive, so thoroughly cultivated, and so precise (in the best sense: thanks to a dynamic, elastic thread of pure groove).

The flutes of Chip Wickham (concert-tuned and in its rougher-around-the-edges, lower version) provide melodic phrases and tonal textures that we love so much, from whispers to wails, approaching at times the soulful tones that characterized the most beloved voices of that era.

The album offers seven shades of soul-jazz: from the carefree, homey vibe of Walk On, through the New Orleans-influenced Sunday gathering spirit of Run Tell That, or the cooler, more cinematic elegance of Cold Catch, to the festive Sliced, Diced and Fried Twice—a reminder that music shares so much language and emotion with food, and that the term “soul” applies to both. The Saint And The Stranger is another take on cinematic soul, with nods to Cinevox police soundtracks, while Snick Snack satisfies our appetite for more hot, greasy blues. Finally, How Long Before You’re Gone closes the album with a groove that could well be on a Nina Simone playlist, reminding us that soul-jazz has always encompassed more than late nights and fried chicken.

Doo Ha! is a great soul-jazz record, but more than that, it's a testament to the love of soul that lives in the North of England, and an opportunity for you to be a part of this era in that history as well.
Credits.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_1d314b3a-ab3a-448a-9467-465e82ef60c5.jpg?v=1752786030
