Two years on, the experienced Dutch producer returns to action for the first time since, delivering in the process another quartet of stellar-gazing productions.

Via releases on Deepermotions, Rush Hour and Hometaping Is Killing Music, Weiss has built a reputation for combining a deep understanding of dancefloor dynamics with a sci-fi inspired, futurist aesthetic. Both complementary traits are very much in evidence on this second outing for Voyage Direct.

Weiss blasts off with “Brain Fever”, where a raw, mind-altering arpeggio bassline, fuzzy drum machine hits, spacey chords and alien electronics propel our hero skywards. Think of it as techno for funk-loving, Italo disco-freaking astronauts whose journey to the end of the universe is just beginning. This intergalactic funk blueprint is further explored on the deeper, more melodious “You Want A Cigarette”, where Weiss’s vocoder vocals wrap themselves around mutant TB-303 lines, adrenaline-fuelled chords and rattling mechanical percussion.

On “Space Ghetto (Booty)”, our hero celebrates the discovery of previously unknown worlds in the only way he knows how. With kaleidoscopic electronic motifs running at warp speed and a funk-driven synth bass taking centre stage, Weiss delivers his own take on electrofunk. Pleasingly fuzzy and held together firmly by the syncopated drum machine handclaps of ghetto house, it’s a typically visionary and appealing proposition.

With barely two minutes before his spaceship lands in alien territory, Weiss closes things down with the melancholic chord progressions and heartfelt vocoder vocals of “Intro”, a beatless excursion tailor-made for dramatic set openers and goose bump-inducing mix outros. He may be heading into unchartered territory, but it won’t be the last you hear from Simon Weiss.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_2d0cbd3c-d588-4867-a0ee-10c3f2d8d67b.jpg?v=1773368825
