The youngest son of the legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti is as outraged by injustice as his father was, and with his powerful new album Black Times, featuring collaborations with Carlos Santana and Robert Glasper, he pays homage to past revolutionaries and ignites the flame for future generations.

Black Times is the fourth album from Seun and Egypt 80, the extraordinary dance orchestra created by Fela Kuti as an avenue for the people's expression. Inherited in 1997 by a mere 14-year-old Seun, the band has been the stage where the young Kuti has forged his own path, leading to this, his most accomplished and honest album to date. "Black Times is a true reflection of my political and social beliefs," says the 34-year-old singer, bandleader, and musician. "It's an album for anyone who believes in change and understands our duty to rise up and unite. The elites always try to divide the working class and the poor of the world. The same oppression felt by workers in Flint, Michigan, is also felt by those in Lagos and Johannesburg."

Here we find tracks designed to spark conversation and reframe priorities. The elegant 'African Dreams' emphasizes that commercial success isn't everything. Kuti warns against taking certain "accepted" African-American celebrities as references, and instead, admiring the thinking of figures like the late Pan-Africanist Doctor Amos Wilson. "The message," Kuti sings, "is free." Black Times, with its powerful harmonies between male and female voices, furious guitar riffs, and Kuti's vibrant tenor saxophone, delivers the truth. Lyrics like "Understand your history / rise to be free" illuminate with forensic precision what often remains hidden, an effect intensified by Carlos Santana's unmistakable guitar.

'Bad Man Lighter' is a brass-laden track that denounces hypocrisy and defends the right to smoke quality weed; 'Corporate Public Control Department (C.P.C.D)' is a protest anthem aimed at Muhammadu Buhari's Nigerian government and, in general, corrupt politicians worldwide. Co-written with Egypt 80 veteran saxophonist Abedimeji 'Showboy' Fagbemi, the frantic 'Kuku Kee Me' borrows a Nigerian expression meaning something like "When someone keeps bothering you, you say 'save yourself the effort and just kill me now'."

'Theory Of Goat And Yam' ridicules a metaphor invented by former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, who justified corruption by comparing politicians to goats tempted by yams: "By keeping the money meant for hospitals or roads, they are actually costing human lives." 'Last Revolutionary', with Robert Glasper on keyboards, is a tribute to the true leaders of the past, present, and future, mentioning African heroes like Kwame Nkrumah, Thomas Sankara, and Patrice Lumumba. "I say the names of these men who died for us without any promise of resurrection," Seun Kuti explains. "Maybe it will make a young man or woman wonder who they were. Maybe they'll Google them and that will lead them on a journey whose destination is still unknown."

"We are all capable of change, we, the iron people, we, the workers. Black Times is the sound of the people and a weapon of the future. The big picture needs more color."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_d99e8c87-5b9a-4a84-a640-dac32aa324a6.jpg?v=1739835159
