Thus, Sababa 5 create a unique psychedelic groove which relies on an approach similar to labels such as Daptone: working independently, writing, producing and recording original music with a modern take on 70s soul and funk.

Among the highlights is “Malca” (a feminine name meaning “queen”). Built on fragmented synth lines, a laid-back groove linking East Africa with Anatolian psychedelia and vintage organs, the instrumental piece reaches its climax in a transformative chord change which launches it into the stratosphere.

The carnival-esque “Lizarb” (“Brazil” backwards) raises the tempo and temperature. The piece kicks off with a call-and-response guitar dialogue, before a synth-driven melody elevates everything to another level. Towards the end, it’s crowned by a beautiful guitar solo blending wah-wah and mizrahi-style psychedelia over a pulsing drum and groove line, which demands a physical response.

“Habedil” (“the idiot” in Hebrew) takes its name from the innocent, almost childish synths which open it, as bass and guitar repeat riffs building an irresistible groove before flowing into an epic disco passage dominated by synths.

With this self-titled debut, Sababa 5 are set to take their place among the world’s most exciting and original instrumental groups, thanks to a distinctive and vibrant approach to groove, sound, and melody.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_1e8f3ab3-407e-43b5-bd67-d72da796439c.jpg?v=1770257584
