Widely associated with iconic venues such as Berlin, Berghain, and Hard Wax, Dettmann remains true to his roots by constantly innovating his interpretation of electronic music, integrating art with the scene. Raised in the former GDR, in a small town near Berlin, Dettmann began developing his passion for electronic music at a very young age. Bands such as Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Front 242, as well as post-punk and industrial, were among his earliest influences, long before discovering his affinity for techno. For Dettmann, innovation has always been a fundamental pillar of techno and, by extension, of his creativity. This is why he fell in love with the futuristic sound and culture in the 90s, and why, as one of the most respected and consistent DJs and producers in the genre, he has never stood still.

Relentlessly pushing forward and testing the limits of his comfort zone has been as essential as mixing the next track. Dettmann has always worked across multiple disciplines and has been an integral part of Berlin's Berghain club. His work as a DJ encompasses a unique sound for a multiplicity of dance floors worldwide, but also for home and beyond, through his curated editions of iconic compilations (Fabric, Berghain, DJ-Kicks, among many others). Throughout his discography of solo albums (Ostgut Ton and Dekmantel), an extensive list of remixes (Moderat, Fever Ray, Yello, among many more), and interdisciplinary artistic projects (MASSE with the Berlin State Ballet, the New Works exhibition with Frederike von Rauch, and his participation in the Matrix Resurrections soundtrack), he has pushed his own sound to the limit. On his labels MDR and Bad Manners, Dettmann took on the role of curator, pushing the next generation of artists.

My Own Shadow is the latest chapter in the illustrious career of this Berlin-based legend. "The name reflects the idea of working with something that is always with me, but often unseen. Over the years I have gathered hundreds of fragments — music, sketches, photographs — and My Own Shadow became the umbrella that brings them together. It felt like the right time, because I have reached a point where I not only want to release tracks or play club sets; I want to create a space where all my artistic expressions meet." Combining techno with film, sketches, and photography, the shows are less club sets and more immersive experiences, where the audience gets lost in a "complete sensory narrative."

The first official release of My Own Shadow, Approaching, is a five-track EP set to be released on !K7 Records in November. Accompanied by Dettmann's own photography on the release art, the music moves between techno and ambient, effervescent with unrestrained funk and an energy very different from any of his previous productions.

From the harsh and abrasive ambient of the title track, with a composition that hauntingly lingers between dramatically charged atmospheres, to "DMT" and "Without A Cause," which offer two journeys of hypnotic techno with a subconscious awareness that seems to come from beyond the material plane. In "Timefold," a tide of noise rises and falls over crunchy, forceful kicks. My Own Shadow goes even further: it's not just sound, it's also image and space. "Think of it as a living archive that I can reconfigure in real time. Each show, each photograph, each fragment is part of the same shadow: always in motion, never the same twice."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_c26216f1-febe-4af4-966c-500d59c509ce.jpg?v=1767919751
