But there is still a lot of more interesting music from the late 70s and early 80s that is still waiting to surface. One of these unexplored territories is the funky and unrestrained side of German underground disco and new wave from that period.

At that time, many German bands tried to create their own version of English and American styles. After Kraftwerk and Can started using the German language in a fresh and modern way, many bands that followed in their footsteps began experimenting with German new wave. Most of these groups did not reach a wide audience. Their records were rarely pressed in more than 300–500 copies, as they appeared several years before the big commercial explosion of German pop in 1984: the NDW or “Neue Deutsche Welle,” with Nena's huge hit 99 Red Balloons.

The bands included in this compilation released their music before the NDW boom and later broke up. Many of those early bands might deserve to be forgotten, but if you dig a little deeper, real gems appear, full of style and attitude. And that's exactly what Toy Tonics heads, Mathias “Munk” Modica and Kapote, did: they hit the nail on the head.

Most of these tracks had already been released on the original Teutonik Disaster compilation in 2003 on Gomma Records. Gomma was the label that Mathias “Munk” Modica founded before Toy Tonics, about 15 years ago, and where he released records by artists such as James Murphy, WhoMadeWho, and Asia Argento. Gomma is no longer active, but it seemed like the right time to re-release this compilation in 2019.

Munk and his Toy Tonics partner, Kapote, created new versions of these rare songs, adding drum machines and extending them. The result is incredible music: powerful funk basslines, soulful vibes, cool vocals that you would hardly expect from German bands, and an energy that fits perfectly into the post-techno and post-deep house landscape of 2019.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_60d5cbb6-1759-4de1-8320-30d36da4248f.jpg?v=1772750467
