And Pampa is happy to provide them with the right platform. The Sheets Of Rane EP is the most sophisticated statement yet from the Berlin duo, imbuing programmed and cold sounds with a human glow and a pronounced penchant for melody.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA1 “Gscheids Planet” unfurls with a deceptive intro: downtempo click-clack beats and crunchy snares under a gentle vocoder murmur, just as discrete guitar plucks build to a crescendo that bursts into a flurry of robotic synths. Although three minutes have already passed, it is only at this point that the track reveals its true nature: a summery melody with rich synths that seem to inflate with the wind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen, as its title implies, “Haeckles Kosmos” further explores Dürerstuben’s fascination with the infinite reaches of outer space. This particular star system has a very tropical feel, accented by jaunty parallel fifths that sound straight out of Italo Orient. Between sections, the duo introduces brief digressions into a piano ballad, the kind that inevitably elicit a smile (and a record deal) from DJ Koze.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, venturing further into jacking territory, “Freiherr in der Wall” is built on syncopated, at times wobbly, beatbox rhythms, a bassline with attitude, and vibrant arpeggios. Combined with hand-played chords, it’s a clear example of how Dürerstuben can tame the machine and turn its irregularities into virtues.
