Part 1 - Unreleased House Music 1997 (EP) by DJ Romain

"1996-97? Yeah, that was the era when New York was still NEW YORK!

It was around then that we really started to get exotic herb. Copper Haze, hydroponic! The vibes in the studio were always wonderful. I had hair back then! Shoulder length dreadlocks... I was still wearing Wallabees, or British Walkers as we called them - reppin' Brooklyn and my West Indian roots.

There was no social media, no supervision, no one all up in our business... It was classic ‘mind your business’ New York. I was spinning at many of the hottest clubs and the HOTTEST after-hours in the city. There were nights I saw Michael Douglas pull up to the afters with Grace Jones - they were going to have fun and unwind, and I was there dropping the best tracks for the people.

When it was time to get in the studio with my compadre Matt Echols... I would probably start the session with some good herb, a giant bag of Funyuns and my trusty SP-1200, lol. I had learned some tricks from Todd Terry, and by '96-'97 I was a total master at it. In those days, tracks like "Flowers" and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Dub)" were tearing up the clubs. I wanted to be able to express my ideas seamlessly, and by then I had a lot of confidence...

The fact that I was able to DJ at some of the hottest spots in New York at the time allowed me to really see what worked and what didn't on the dance floor. The best House dancers from all over the world and the Tri-State area were at my parties. I'm talking Ejoe, Voodoo Ray, maybe guys from the Mop-Top Crew... I was definitely taking note of the rhythms and sounds that made them go wild on the floor.

And that's how we did it: I would lay down the beats that made people jump in my sets and translate the vibes I picked up from New York itself. Matt brought the musicality and we were just being as creative and inventive as possible. But we always kept in mind that our job was to make the people on the dance floor move.

Many of the tracks from those days were signed by various record labels, we released many on our own label... and some ended up in the archives - until now!"

DJ Romain

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_ad84f75f-c895-4a48-b4df-8a067cb7f965.jpg?v=1723583197
https://tenampa.mx/en/products/dj-romain-the-lost-d-a-t-s-part-1-unreleased-house-music-1997-hard-times
