Following on from edits by Dan Tyler & Nick The Record, Luke Una, and Danny Krivit, DJ Nature selects four standout cuts spanning modern soul, psychedelic funk, boogie and leftfield disco, giving each his distinctive twist for today's dancefloor.

In 1989, Bristol-born DJ Nature moved to New York, a city where he knew his raw, textured aesthetic would be better appreciated at the time. He immersed himself in the NYC scene, frequently attending underground house and disco clubs to hear pioneers like Larry Levan (The Choice), Louie Vega (Sound Factory Bar), and Tony Humphries (Zanzibar). That same year, surrounded by a massive amount of underground dance music, DJ Nature set up an export company to supply the Japanese market. “I’ve had a connection with Japan for over 40 years, dating back to when I visited the country as a DJ with Ray Petri’s fashion house Buffalo. From there, I linked up with the Major Force collective and others,” he explains.

Having been a record collector for 20 years by now, DJ Nature launched his own label, Ruff Disco Records, in 1992, releasing productions under his early alias, Natureboy. Since then, Nature has gone on to become an underground legend as a DJ and producer, touring the world and putting out records on respected labels such as Golf Channel Recordings, Jazzy Sport, Hot Biscuit Recordings and Futureboogie Recordings.

Reflecting his love of raw, independent disco, jazz fusion and early house, DJ Nature chose four tracks from the Mr Bongo archive that he felt had club-ready production and were perfect for editing. First up is an extended re-take of the ultra-rare 1986 Chicago modern soul/disco tune “Straight Forward (Non-Stop)” by P.J. City. Staying true and respectful to the original, DJ Nature finesses and extends it so it feels like a longer take straight out of the original recording session.

Next up is a sublime take on 1977’s “Del Copacabana A 34” from the Cuban band Grupo Los Yoyi. Here, Nature extends and beefs up the track, looping the most intense, hypnotic, and spacious sections to let the energy slowly build to a boiling point.

On the flip, DJ Nature revamps a lesser-known gem from the Elite Records catalogue. Originally produced by Andy Sojka, Antoniou’s pulsating 1982 electronic disco groove “Sound On Sound” is transformed into a cosmic, peak-time boogie whirlwind. Closing out the EP, he turns to the mysterious Marxist Love Disco Ensemble and their 2022 album MLDE, re-editing the quirky leftfield disco winner “Dust” into a more DJ and dancefloor-friendly version.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_fb2d042d-4051-40d5-b0d1-a8fd08067781.jpg?v=1773093039
