In 2013, Resident Advisor named John Talabot's wonderfully Balearic entry the best mix of the year. Then, of course, there are those amazing contributions from James Holden, Henrik Schwarz, Scuba, Erlend Øye... the list of gems goes on. But Will Saul is up to the challenge, and his chapter in the continuing DJ-Kicks story easily meets the standards set by its predecessors.

Saul has said that the mix is a representation of his club sets, as it is largely comprised of tracks from his labels (Aus Music and Simple), his own productions, and exclusives from his friends. (And when your contact list includes figures like Axel Boman, Youandewan, Bicep, and Sei A, why wouldn't you?) Throughout the mix, an overarching sense of grandeur merges with one of intimacy, which is no easy feat, but it's a trick that Saul has been perfecting throughout his career. Beginning with the enveloping, rhythm-less "Bendy"—made by the team of Kieren "Komen" Lomax and Saul himself—the mix launches with an aura of hazy serenity, typified by "The Visionary State," produced by Komen (again) and Appleblim. When that song slides into the deep majesty of Joe Gray's "Tozai," which in turn slides into the misty exoticism of Cottam's "Healing Process," it's sublime.

After this introductory, enveloping passage, the mix enters a new phase, typified by Jabru's "Church"—featuring alt-soul singer Joel Culpepper, this track is elegant, beautifully executed, and thoroughly resonant. The song weds his quavering vocal sigh—close-miked and sung in a hushed falsetto—to a wistful melody. Despite its relative simplicity, it's infused with emotion. That sense of restrained grace is one of Saul's specialties, and the tracks that follow—such as Leon Vynehall's melancholy "Time," or Walton's vibrant, jangling "Birds"—maintain that vibe.

Things toughen up a bit towards the mix's close. Bicep's "Nova" weds ethereal synths to a thumping breakbeat, and an airy vocal sample serves as the finishing touch. Legowelt's "Ethereal Techno Music Will Never Die" sounds pretty much as its title suggests. Gerry Read's "Baseball" is a minimal, jabbing track. Finally, the set closes with Second Storey's truly beautiful "Oxygene," full of stuttering rhythms and cathedral-like chords.

There's a kind of quiet serenity to Saul's DJ-Kicks; it's patiently constructed, progressing at a leisurely rather than a rushed pace. But if you pay attention, you'll find a dynamic, skillfully crafted set full of soul-stirring music. It's a dream-like testament to Saul's selection skills, one that deserves an attentive, uninterrupted listen.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0583/1239/2867/files/image_178c2b45-28d0-4618-97c5-044a6cb6c254.jpg?v=1727978549
